Best Cities in Europe to Visit During the Winter Holiday Season
It’s the perfect time to book your holiday travel if you haven’t already. Europe is one of our favorite winter holiday destinations: it’s less crowded (and expensive) than the peak summer season, and from its culturally-rich museums to its enchanting Christmas Markets (ideal for cruising), there’s plenty to keep you busy (and warm)! Influencer Taylor Kane shares her top picks.
Considering a trip to Europe this winter holiday season? I’ve traveled to 18 countries in Europe, on multiple occasions and at different times of the year. Here are my favorite cities in Europe to visit during the winter holiday season:
Prague, Czech Republic
With its fairytale-like architecture, Prague has charm like no other! It is incredibly well preserved because it was mostly untouched during World War II, unlike some cities in nearby countries which unfortunately faced a lot of destruction. Winter is a great time to visit Prague because the city is adorned with holiday decorations, including a massive tree in the middle of Old Town Square. Here you will also find Christmas markets throughout the entire month of December, which are a perfect way to get some last minute gifts and really get into the holiday feel.
Berlin, Germany
Berlin is an incredibly unique city and a great place to visit in wintertime. While most days are gray and overcast, Berlin usually doesn’t get too much snow. However, it can be absolutely freezing and windy, so I definitely recommend packing a warm scarf! But don’t let the weather turn you off from visiting Berlin during the winter holiday season. The reason Berlin is so great this time of year is because there are so many incredible museums, Christmas markets, and a botanical garden decked out in Christmas lights.
London, United Kingdom
I honestly think winter is the best time to visit London. During this season the entire city is decorated with lights, wreaths, and bells! Like Berlin, London doesn’t get much snow, in fact the temperature rarely drops below 40 degrees Fahrenheit in winter! Tourism in London is also quieter in the winter than other times of year, so if that’s important to you, it’s an excellent time to visit. I definitely recommend visiting Harrods, an iconic department store that organizes a Christmas grotto every year.
Geneva, Switzerland
While Geneva is a good idea at any time of year, visiting in the winter is a truly magical experience. The city’s Christmas markets run from the end of November to Christmas Eve and are just stunning against the backdrop of Lake Geneva. Although Geneva itself doesn’t have too much snow, it’s a perfect city break for the wintertime with plenty of snow-capped mountains and skiing nearby. One great way to keep warm is by enjoying one (or more) of the four types of fondue: cheese, oil, broth, and chocolate!
