Emerging Destinations: Mostar
In recent months, you may have a photo (or three) of people jumping off an iconic bridge with gorgeous emerald water flowing underneath it and a tagged location saying Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina?
Though conflict remains recent within its history, Mostar is emerging to be a popular tourist destination in the Balkans. As long as you’re not dealing with politics, then this spot is for you.
Mostar is a beautiful and historic city with something to offer everyone. Whether you’re interested in history, culture, or nature, you’re sure to find something to love in this city. Its Old Town with its centre piece Stari Most – a bridge built in the 16th century is certainly the main attraction in the city. It was rebuilt in 2004 due to the damages caused by the Bosnian War, and is now one of the most photographed landmarks in the country.
Jumping off this bridge is never for the faint hearted. The infamous Red Bull Cliff Diving series have held their events at this spot. However, should you dare jump, you may just be awarded a certificate so you can let everybody know you were a badass.
For food, be sure to try the local specialties such as burek (a savoury pastry) and ćevapi (grilled sausages).
Ultimately, Mostar is the perfect base to explore the gems of Herzegovina –the smaller sister in the south of Bosnia. Whether you’re taking a Herzegovina Tour or driving, exploring these spots is doable within a day or two. If you’re feeling adventurous, discover the Tara River Canyon – one of Europe’s deepest canyons where you can raft, kayak or hike around the area.
Feeling like taking a refreshing dip? Head to Kravice Waterfalls where you can swim and equally chill at one of their beer gardens located next to the river.
Want to see something unique? Head over to Blagaj, and see Blagaj Tekija –a Dervish Monastery located next to a cave with gorgeous emerald waters of the Buna river flowing next to it. The water coming out of this cave apparently has ‘healing’ powers, too.
If Mostar is not yet on your radar, I think it should be by now.
